R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen

By localbandz, 2020-10-07
R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen

The music world has suffered a great loss as Van Halen guitarist and co-founder Eddie Van Halen has died at the age of 65.

Born in Amsterdam to Jan van Halen and Eugenia van Halen, Edward was part of a musical family. His father was a clarinetist, saxophonist and pianist. The family moved to Pasadena, California in February 1962 and Eddie and his brother Alex gravitated toward music at a young age, with both siblings starting on piano at the age of six. Eddie eventually picked up guitar, admitting years later in an interview that he did not read music. The guitarist learned from watching and listening, making his improvisational skills all the more impressive.

Eddie and Alex formed their first band in 1972, eventually adopting the Van Halen family name for the group in the mid-'70s and landing a record deal with Warner Bros. in 1977. The band, which by that point featured David Lee Roth on vocals and Michael Anthony on bass, released their self-titled debut album in 1978, bolstered by Eddie's ear-catching guitar playing on their introductory cover of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me." The album also featured "Eruption," a track displaying Eddie's nimble guitar playing that made him an instant favorite as a new guitar hero in the hard rock scene.

During his time with Van Halen, the band released 12 studio albums, including the Diamond certified 1984 , which has sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. Other accolades included a Grammy in 1992 for Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal for their album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge . Van Halen were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Eddie's skills were also heavily sought out by many of his peers. He famously delivered the guitar solo for Michael Jackson's "Beat It" off the Thriller album. He's also worked with KISS, Black Sabbath, Brian May, Roger Waters, Steve Lukather and LL Cool J among others.

The guitarist made headlines in 1981 when he wed One Day at a Time actress Valerie Bertinelli. The couple are the parents of Wolfgang Van Halen. In 2005, the couple split. He remarried, tying the knot with Janie Liszewski in 2009.

In 2000, Eddie underwent treatment for tongue cancer and had a portion of his tongue removed. He was declared cancer free in 2002.

Van Halen is widely recognized as one of the greatest guitarists in rock history, with his influence felt across players of a whole generation.

New Jimi Hendrix Album "Both Sides of the Sky"

On March 9, Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings proudly release Both Sides of the Sky, a dynamic new Jimi Hendrix album featuring 13 studio recordings made between 1968 and 1970—10 of which have never before been released. The album will be released on multiple formats including CD, digital, and as a 180 gram audiophile vinyl 2LP.

Both Sides of the Sky is the third volume in a trilogy of albums intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in the music legend’s archive. This third release is anticipated to complete the spectacular recording event in epic fashion. “Since Experience Hendrix began its restoration of the Jimi Hendrix music catalog in 1997, our goal has been to present these important recordings to Jimi’s fans in the best possible quality. We are excited about achieving that. We’ve also been intent on generating album releases which present this amazing music in its proper context,” explains John McDermott, one of the album’s co-producers, together with Janie Hendrix and Eddie Kramer.

Pre-Order the New Album 'Both Sides of the Sky'

TRACK LIST:
1. Mannish Boy* – The first ever studio session by the group Hendrix would christen as his Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix, Cox & Miles shared a love for the blues as this driving, uptempo reworking of “Mannish Boy” by Muddy Waters makes clear.
2. Lover Man* – Just two weeks before their triumphant New Year’s concerts at the Fillmore East in NYC [yielding both 1970’s Band Of Gypsys and 2016’s sequel Machine Gun], Hendrix gathered with Cox and Miles to cut this dynamic rendition of what had become a favorite concert staple.
3. Hear My Train A Comin’* – this version hails from April 1969 and features the original Jimi Hendrix Experience (Hendrix, Redding, Mitchell) in their penultimate recording session. They recorded the song live in the studio and tore into it with savage fury.
4. Stepping Stone* – A totally unique take on this Hendrix favorite, with Jimi showcasing both blues and country styled licks atop a relentless, galloping beat.
5. $20 Fine* -Stephen Stills joined Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles Express keyboardist Duane Hitchings at this September 1969 session. With Stephen handling lead vocals and organ, Jimi added multiple guitar parts to this rollicking Stills original.
6. Power Of Soul – This 1970 studio session came three weeks after the Band Of Gypsys concerts at the Fillmore East. While a live version remains one of the highpoints of Band Of Gypsys, Jimi never released a studio version during his lifetime. For this album, we present the mix that Hendrix and Kramer prepared of the complete song at Electric Lady on August 22, 1970.
7. Jungle* – The influence of Curtis Mayfield can be heard here as Jimi expands on the “Villanova Junction Blues” theme he made famous by its inclusion in the 1970 Woodstock documentary.
8. Things I Used To Do – Jimi is joined for this rendition of Guitar Slim’s blues classic by Johnny Winter. Jimi’s trademark guitar work and Winter’s deft slide playing weaves in and around the foundation set by bassist Billy Cox and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young drummer Dallas Taylor.
9. Georgia Blues – Jimi reunited with some old friends from his pre-Experience days. Lonnie Youngblood, with whom Hendrix played in R&B groups like Curtis Knight & The Squires, voiced this superb twelve bar blues neatly underpinned by Hendrix’s sublime rhythm and lead guitar work.
10. Sweet Angel* – With Axis: Bold As Love only just released, Jimi immediately turned his focus to recording what would become Electric Ladyland. This gorgeous, instrumental reading of “Angel,”, features Jimi on guitar, bass and vibraphone joined by Mitch Mitchell.
11. Woodstock* – Stephen Stills came to this session fresh from having visited Joni Mitchell, who had a new song that Stills was excited to try and record. Long before CSNY’s version, Stephen, Jimi and Buddy Miles recorded this amazing rendition.
12. Send My Love To Linda* – A superb new Hendrix original composition recorded with Cox and Miles in the aftermath of their successful Band Of Gypsys performances at the Fillmore East.
13. Cherokee Mist* – Together with drummer Mitch Mitchell, Jimi created this moody, evocative original complete with his playing of a sitar to complement his traditional electric guitar.

How Lemmy and Motorhead Gave Metal Its Umlaut

Lemmy Kilmister , who died December 28th , left an indelible mark on rock & roll. Everything about him — his thunderous singing and songwriting, his drugs-and-smokes lifestyle, even his protruding facial moles — was unapologetic and uncompromising. But just as important, Lemmy and Motörhead  left their grammatical mark on rock & roll.

Yes, we're talking about that umlaut — and Lemmy's role in popularizing one of   rock's most wonderfully enduring, if sometimes nonsensical, traditions.

Motörhead were, of course, not the first band to stick dots above one or more letters in their name for no practical phonetic reason. In the late Sixties, German proggers Amon Düül were most likely the first to take the umlaut plunge. In 1971, Blue Öyster Cult gave the mark its first brush with mainstream crossover. As original manager and producer Sandy Pearlman told me years ago, he and rock writer Richard Meltzer were talking about the band one day while standing outside a New York restaurant that served up Blue Point oysters. "I said, 'Why don't we call it Blue Oyster Cult?'" Pearlman recalled. "And Richard said, 'And we'll add an umlaut over the "O"!' And I said, 'Great!"'

Several years later, when Lemmy parted ways with psychedelic art-rockers Hawkwind, he initially dubbed his new band Bastard — but ultimately settled on Motorhead, after a song he'd written in Hawkwind (it was also slang for bikers on speed). The crowning touch was the addition of the umlaut over that second "o." "I thought it looked mean," he said a few years ago. "That's the thing, innit?"

Mean, if not gnarly, was indeed the key. In their pre–"(Don't Fear) the Reaper" days, Blue Öyster Cult peppered their image and lyrics with intimations of menace and darkness, especially in songs like "Career of Evil" and "Dominance and Submission." But when it was attached to Motörhead, the umlaut, combined with Lemmy and his bandmates' scraped-raw approach to rock & roll, felt like the real ominous deal, and its repercussions were huge. "I pinched the idea off Blue Öyster Cult," Lemmy said in 2011. "Then Mötley Crüe pinched it off us and it goes on and on."

"I pinched the idea off Blue Öyster Cult. Then Mötley Crüe pinched it off us and it goes on and on." —Lemmy Kilmister

A modest but accurate boast: Rock history is now dotted — literally — with the Crüe, Queensrÿche, Hüsker Dü (not metal, and Swedish for "Do you remember?"), the Accüsed, Green Jellÿ (umlaut used ironically), Spinal Tap (often spelled, for optimum intended hilarity, with the umlaut over the "n"), and Rrröööaaarrr (1986 album by Canadian headbangers Voivod). Even R&B singer Jason Derulo used an umlaut on the cover of his first album, over the "u" in his last name, to help people correctly pronounce his surname.

For Lemmy, though, the umlaut was neither gag nor phonetical necessity. Just as Motorhead's early records injected a faster-louder rush and intensity into Seventies metal, shaking off any arena-rock sludginess that started to creep into the genre, so did the band's umlaut make a statement of its own. The diacritic firmed up metal's edge and identity; it declared that the music would always be a separate, sometimes jarring and rude, universe unto itself. (Lemmy, a collector of Nazi memorabilia, rarely if ever commented on any connection between that umlaut and Nazi-era use of the dots in say, "Führer.") For Lemmy, the umlaut, like the music and lifestyle he lived until his body couldn't take it anymore, spoke — or pronounced — volumes.

BBC Radio 6 Music announces its Top 15 Albums of the Year

added: 20 Dec 2014 // by:  Music-News.com Newsdesk

Today, BBC Radio 6 Music announced its No.1 album of the year, as voted for by the network's presenters and teams.

Since 1 December the station has been counting down the Top 15 Albums of the Year as chosen and voted for by 6 Music's presenters and production teams. Shaun Keaveny has been leading the countdown, revealing the name of the album each day on his Breakfast Show, accompanied by interviews with each act by music news presenter, Matt Everitt. These interviews are now available to listen to at bbc.co.uk/6music. Also on the website is a dedicated page for each album, a selection of archive sessions from the band/artist plus a BBC Playlister page that features three tracks from each record.

There will also be a Sunday Lunchtime Special on Sunday 28 December, 1-2pm, that will feature a track from all of the Top 15 albums, and will include contributions from 6 Music's presenters saying what they loved about their chosen record.

The Top 15 Albums

1 The War On Drugs ' Lost In The Dream
Mark Radcliffe said: 'A 'proper' album where one track just effortlessly drifts into the next. It's an introvert's take on classic rock with echoes of Dylan and Springsteen but all wrapped in a blissful, slacker's haze. Over the summer it accompanied me on more or less every journey I took. And what a summer it was. It seems like a dream now but a dream that recurs every time I put the album on. I keep coming back to the same word. Blissful.'

2 St Vincent ' St Vincent
Stuart Maconie said: 'It's a brilliant brilliant idiosyncratic unique piece of work. She does something that I always love in records, there's an art streak and a pop streak. You can hear she's steeped in sleek 80s pop like Madonna and Prince. But there's another quirky arty thing coming through. She seems to be a unique act at the moment really. Brilliant guitarist, brilliant songwriter and brilliant singer. It's refreshing and sparkling.'

3 First Aid Kit ' Stay Gold
Liz Kershaw said: 'This record came out in June, just in time for a long hot summer of fun. It was on in my car all the time, with the wind in my hair and my ear full of the stunning, searing girlie harmonies. When I interviewed them on my show, I realised their harmonies are due to the fact that they're so close. Like the Everly Brothers and loads of other sibling combos down the decades, there's something in their genes that just makes their voices gel. I'd have never have guessed they were from Sweden, they sound like they're from Nashville or somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line.'

4 Kate Tempest ' Everybody Down
Huey Morgan said: 'It's one of those records, some artists can do it and some can't. She's one of those artists that will keep on doing it into the future. This is a concept record that I find really moving and uplifting and insightful and quintessentially her. Theme from Becky is one of my favourite records out there. I want you all to wrap yourselves around Kate Tempest and her music. She's fantastic.'

5 Sharon Van Etten - Are We There
Gideon Coe said: 'It's a record that came out at the beginning of the year, and that can count against it when it comes to things like an end of year poll such as this one. It's a follow up to an album I loved (Tramp), and I think I love this one even more. Why? Because the song writing is great, it's an emotional record, it's an involving one, it has moments of melody and harmony and use of brass and woodwind. Over and above, it's a beautifully produced album from start to finish.'

6 Caribou - Our Love
Lauren Laverne said: 'I've always loved Dan Snaith's music and this record is a real example of why he is so brilliant at what he does. Electronic music is often seen as quite cerebral and chin strokey and a lot of the chat around Dan's music is that he has a PhD in Maths and he's seen as this very intense intelligent guy. He is very intelligent, but he wears that so lightly and what I love about this record is that it's such an emotional album, an opposite to the clichés that people often have about dance and electronic music. It's lyrical and gentle. When he came in for a session he told me it's all about the different loves in his life. I think even if you don't know that when you hear it, it makes you appreciate it even more, but if you just want to dance to it you can do that too.'

7 Royal Blood - Royal Blood
Steve Lamacq said: 'It's so thunderous. One of the things I like is that it is a set of songs. We talk about albums hanging together as albums, but this is a great rounded rock record. The force and power when the two of them get together, for a debut record it's really intelligently done. There's a lot more going on than some people give it credit for.'

8 Jack White - Lazaretto
Shaun Keaveny said: 'Jack White's Lazaretto is one of my personal favourites of the year, which is no surprise to people who know me and listen to the programme, because it is whorey old raw rock and roll blues. It's absolutely brilliant from start to finish to be perfectly honest. There are some standout tracks on it. You've got Three Women on there which is a little bawdy as well, which we all enjoy, especially in the mornings. There's fantastic instrumental High Ball Stepper. Lazaretto is a very ambitious work I think, there's some nice fiddle in there as well, and as you get with a lot of latter Jack White stuff, it's almost tending towards a bit of Prog really, meandering in a different time signature and direction. It's a wonderful piece of work and I thoroughly enjoyed it.'

9 Elbow - The Take Off And Landing Of Everything
Don Letts said: 'I was hooked musically and lyrically to this. I'm hooked to an outfit that have consistently released albums that strike an emotional accord and are also complete bodies of work - a rare thing these days. They're one of the UKs finest bands. As for stand out tracks, one, two three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten. Guy and crew, the Don salutes you.'

10 Beck - Morning Phase
Matt Everitt said: 'So there are plenty of Becks. There's sampling post-modern Beck, folk Beck, funk Beck, ironic Beck, pop Beck and dark, acoustic Beck. On Morning Phase - his first album in six years - we get classic singer/songwriter Beck. Aside from his ability to absorb and reinterpret a myriad of styles, his just writes great songs. There's this warmth and beauty to every song. Heart Is a Drum, Say Goodbye and Country Down slowly wind into your brain like looping trails round California hills ' following Beck's gentle vocals and some gorgeous orchestral arrangements. It's introspective without being introverted, cool without being self-conscious, and it just sounds a classic timeless record. Which is what it is.'

11 Future Islands - Singles
Tom Ravenscroft said: 'It's sexy as hell! I think that's the most important thing about the album. It finally got them the recognition they deserve. Everybody is finally noticing them, they're playing loads of festivals and people are starting to appreciate the magnificence that is Future Islands. Everyone is getting to see the awesome dancing of Sam T Herring. The track Light House just makes you get up and dance.'

12 Tune-Yards - Nikki Nack
Mary Anne Hobbs said: 'I love Tune-Yards because she's been so honest about how she felt and the kind of condition she was in. She's reinvented herself as an artist and a woman too. She recorded the album in the moodiest of neighbourhoods in the sweltering summer heat. I think it's one of the most unique and vital, most colourful records of the year, and she's backed that up with truly heart stopping live performances.'

13 Liars ' Mess
Tom Robinson said: 'It's their most polished, oddest and their most accessible record yet. When they recorded a session in Maida Vale for 6 Music they laid down half a dozen storming tracks in just half an hour. Consummate professionals, they turned into wild howling electro beasts and then into softly spoken Californians each time the red light went on and off. It's an album to make you dance, smile and scratch your head and wonder what planet these guys are on.'

14 Todd Terje - It's Album Time
Nemone said: 'I've loved playing this on my Electric Ladyland show. From the elctro-swing sounding Svensk SÃ¥s through the epic electronic ballad he made with Bryan Ferry on their called Johnny and Mary to the singles Delorean Dynamite and Inspector Norse which winds up the album, this is an absolute triumph.'

15 Alt J - This Is All Yours
Chris Hawkins said: 'This is a beautifully crafted album. Hunger of the Pine features an unlikely Miley Cyrus sample after an unlikely friendship was struck. The album, I think, is unique. It's delicate at times and precise. It stirs to become a rousing wall of cacophony. It demonstrates the skilled musicianship of a band keen to push boundaries and make new ground. It made the Billboard Top 5 in America and went to Number 1 in the UK. Not such a difficult second album for Alt J then.'

Gene Simmons: 'Rock Is Finally Dead'

Gene Simmons: 'Rock Is Finally Dead'

The Kiss bassist blames file sharing for murdering rock n' roll, wonders where the next Bob Dylan is

By Daniel Kreps | September 7, 2014

Neil Young once sang "Rock n' roll can never die," but according to Gene Simmons, it's already dead. The Kiss bassist recently made controversial remarks about Donald Sterling , immigration and depression (which he eventually backed off from), and now the Kiss bassist has another enormous statement to make: "Rock is finally dead," Simmons declared in an interview with Esquire . "The death of rock was not a natural death. Rock did not die of old age. It was murdered," he added. But rock's killer wasn't the blurring of musical genres or lack of craftsmanship. Instead, Simmons blames file sharing and the fact that no one values music "enough to pay you for it" for murdering rock n' roll.

Related Kiss Forever: The Rolling Stone Cover Story

"It's very sad for new bands. My heart goes out to them. They just don't have a chance. If you play guitar, it's almost impossible," Simmons tell his son Nick, who interviewed him for Esquire . "You're better off not even learning how to play guitar or write songs, and just singing in the shower and auditioning for The X Factor . And I'm not slamming The X Factor , or pop singers. But where's the next Bob Dylan ? Where's the next Beatles ? Where are the songwriters? Where are the creators? Many of them now have to work behind the scenes, to prop up pop acts and write their stuff for them."

Simmons goes on to say that 1958 to 1983 was music's pinnacle as he could name 100s of iconic musicians. Since then, Simmons lists two bands that have carried on the spirit of that era: Nirvana and, surprisingly, Tame Impala , which Simmons' son turned him on to. "The craft is gone, and that is what technology, in part, has brought us," Simmons said. "What is the next Dark Side of the Moon ? Now that the record industry barely exists, they wouldn't have a chance to make something like that. There is a reason that, along with the usual top-40 juggernauts, some of the biggest touring bands are half old people, like me."

Simmons then points the finger at who he suspects is guilty for killing rock: "My sense is that file sharing started in predominantly white, middle- and upper-middle-class young people who were native-born, who felt they were entitled to have something for free, because that's what they were used to. If you believe in capitalism — and I'm a firm believer in free-market capitalism — then that other model is chaos. It destroys the structure." Simmons also uses this train of thought to slyly apologize for his previous statements about immigration by adding, "I find that many of the more patriotic people are immigrants."

Perhaps upset that they weren't named among "iconic" acts like Nirvana and Tame Impala, Foo Fighters shared Simmons' "Rock is finally dead" interview on their Facebook page , adding "Not so fast, Mr. God of Thunder..." Dave Grohl and company will attempt to exhume and resuscitate rock with their next album Sonic Highways on November 10th.

Foo Fighters - Is this the new album cover?

Could this be the cover of the new Foo Fighters album?

The Foo Fighters may be playing games with their fans.

On Monday, the band started posting numerous clues across different social media sites such as "1 of 8: 36.152146 / -86.797483" along with portions of pictures. Those astute in geography recognized the tweet as geographical coordinates. When fans got to the specified place, they would find pieces of a poster that could be pieced together to form the following image:

The poster represents scenes from the eight different cities where the band recorded their upcoming eighth album, Austin, Chicago, Hollywood, Nashville, New Orleans, New York and Washington.

In other words, all things seem to be converging at eight for the Foo Fighters.

Sometime Monday, August 11 (surprising they didn't do it on the 8th), the band will make a major announcement.

Led Zeppelin Continue Reissues With 'IV' and 'Houses of the Holy'

Alternate versions and 80-page hardbound book highlight classic band's reissues.

By   Kory Grow
July 29, 2014 9:55 AM ET

Less than a year after reissuing their first three albums as deluxe sets, Led Zeppelin plan on putting out two more in the fall. On October 28th, the group will release deluxe editions of its 1971 album, Led Zeppelin IV , and its next record, 1973's Houses of the Holy

The 40 Greatest Led Zeppelin Songs of All Time

Like the previous deluxe reissues, each album will include the original LP, newly remastered by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page, alongside a second disc of previously unreleased audio culled from the band members' vaults. Additionally, each release will also be available as a single album, a single vinyl LP, a deluxe double-LP, digital download and a super deluxe box set, the latter of which features the CDs, LPs, a download card, an 80-page hardbound book with previously unseen photos and memorabilia and a high-quality print of the album cover.

The group's fourth album has become one of the best-selling albums in history since its 1971 release. Home to AOR staples like "Stairway to Heaven," "Rock & Roll," "Black Dog" and "When the Levee Breaks," the album, which is technically untitled, has been certified 23-times platinum. The deluxe edition contains previously unreleased versions of each of the album's eight tracks. Included are alternate mixes of "Rock & Roll," "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Four Sticks," a mandolin/guitar mix of "The Battle of Evermore" and a markedly different version of "Stairway to Heaven" that the group recorded at Los Angeles' Sunset Sound Studio.

That record's follow-up, Houses of the Holy , contains the singles "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "D'Yer Mak'er" and has been certified 11-times platinum since its 1973 release. The deluxe edition bonus disc for Houses of the Holy contains rough, in-progress mixes of "The Ocean" and "Dancing Days," as well as two songs with varied instrumentation: a guitar mix backing track for "Over the Hills and Far Away" and a version of "The Rain Song" without John Paul Jones' piano.

Although the group worked together on assembling these reissues, its surviving members have no intention of touring together anytime soon. In May, Robert Plant told  Rolling Stone that he wished to leave things off with the group's 2007 one-off at London's O2 Arena. "A tour would have been an absolute menagerie of vested interests and the very essence of everything that's shitty about big-time stadium rock," he said. "We were surrounded by a circus of people that would have had our souls on the fire. I'm not part of a jukebox!"

Page said he was "fed up" with Plant's comments in a June interview with The National , but ultimately took the high road. "We have a great history together and like all brothers, we have these moments where we don't speak on the same page but that's life," he said.
