Afro-Jazz Funk Group Releases a Hip-Hop Remix of Their Reggae Drill Song: “I’ll Be There”

The “I’ll Be There Hip-Hop Remix” features an aggressive drill flow by rapper, Rasul The Knowbody, an acclaimed web 3 game developer and influencer.  The video for the remix includes footage of Jamaican beach scenes from the original video plus Rasul at the beach at night, traveling, and clips from Plunky’s Sandbox game that Rasul has developed.  An NFT of the remixed song is available at Pianity.com.

        Richmond, VA - Plunky & Oneness, the Afro-funk jazz group known for their eclecticism and genre-busting explorations, released their latest single, “I’ll Be There,” on N.A.M.E. Brand Records. The single marked a departure from their usual sound, with a reggae-influenced R&B track that showcases Plunky’s heartfelt vocals and emotional lyrics.   

      “I’ll Be There” is a song about loyalty and fidelity, with a lover pledging their devotion to their long-term partner. Plunky composed the melody and lyrics over a drill rhythm track produced by his son, Fire, and DJ Diallo. The sparse, dub-reggae rhythm track spotlights the song’s poignant message and soulful performance by Plunky and his background singers.

       The “I’ll Be There” music video, shot on location in Montego Bay, Jamaica, features breathtaking footage of the tropical setting and creates a wistful backdrop for the lover’s pledging declaration. The video with its aerial drone footage was directed by Fire and edited by Plunky.

 DJ Papa D, MC and music director of Dub Party FM Radio in Jamaica, has already been playing preliminary mixes of “I’ll Be There” on his radio show, and receiving tremendous responses from his listeners. Plunky said, “The feedback from Papa D and his audience has been encouraging and validates the vibrancy of the track and the universal sentiment of the song.”

        Plunky has been at the forefront of Afro-centric jazz, funk, and go-go for over 50 years. He has woven these interrelated musical forms into a forward-looking message of empowerment, positivity, and cultural awareness. Plunky and Oneness of Juju's landmark African Rhythms record was released in 1975 on the pioneering D.C.-based indie label Black Fire.  Plunky's band found itself able to move with the times, scoring early '80s house/disco hits and touring in both Europe and Africa. In recent years, Plunky has recorded in an urban/contemporary vein.

       “These days I am still producing a wide variety of songs in various genres, from experimental cosmic jazz to Afro-beats to R&B funk to smooth instrumentals and hip-hop. So, while we’re doing a few reggae joints, I can’t say that this represents a whole new, singular direction for us,” Plunky said.

The lead song in this EPK was also the last song recorded for the album. I needed one more song  so I made it up from what ever I was feeling was right at the time.   In a few days I had lyrics about the condition of our World today.  In the song I refer to our World today as that of a run away train out of control. I quote  " the train is a runaway, stay on board , enjoy the ride."  At the time, I myself did not know what this song was about. Then it hit me right in the face one day as I listened to the second verse lyrics " Today the War machine is going strong. Is there something wrong. Are we OK."

One of the Violin players on the song is a girl from Kharkov Ukraine. The other I was told was from Turkey. I then found the  Violin players I thought was from Turkey is actually Russian and only in Turkey because he feared for his life after publicly protesting Mr. Putin"s war. 

Turns out the song is about the Russian/Ukrainian War even when I had no idea what I was making the song about. It has both a Russian and Ukrainian Violin player on it working together. I often call it the War song. It's actual name is " Are we OK."  All the players on the song found it interesting how the song came to be while some of us where actually living through this war. The song is also featured here on the video.

 It scored a 7.9 on my reverbnation crowd reveiw. It is the highest score I have ever received.

The second song  " Hello, Goodby "  is an attempt to remember and capture the feeling of the 1980s which I grew up during. It scored a 7.8 on my reverbnation crowd reveiw and for the first time it felt like I was actually being appreciated as an Artist by the critics. I think because they got to see me in the video they realized am an actual human being.  Both songs where choosen for curation by reverbnation.

The award winning Canadian rock band, Critical Mass, has just released a new single entitled “Serenity” on YouTube, Spotify as well as to download sites such as iTunes and Amazon music. The song, co-written by Canadian rock icon, Ray Lyell (Carry Me & Another Man's Gun) and lead vocalist David Wang, is for anyone who is struggling during these difficult times.   Based on the Serenity prayer, where each verse is based on one line of the prayer. “People seem to be really struggling during these turbulent times,” says Wang. “More and more people are struggling with their mental health. we hope that this song can speak to the hearts of the listener and bring them peace.”

The song is produced and engineered by Andrew Horrocks of AME Recording Studio , a CGMA Producer of the Year as well as a Juno and Gemini award nominee. I am David DerMinasian and I am the solo artist for RETCHED I am Old School Thrash Metal .

I'm originally from Del Rey, Ca. a small farming town in Fresno County California. I have recently completed my home studio and I am currently working on my new single called "HORRIFIC" it will be available on all digital platforms by the end of 2020 or soon after that. It is also the title track of my next full length album called "HORRIFIC" to be released on CD and Vinyl later next year in 2021 But in these uncertain times it could take longer. I have come back to the scene after 30 years of being gone I released an older EP called: 

"The Overlord Messiah"

It is a "True Metal style"  EP recorded in 1988 by my first band called "AVATAR" but was never released till 2017. I am still hoping my old band mates will contact me so I can get them on board for "The Overlord Messiah" EP.  It was a very awesome experience that the Heavy Metal communities around the world have welcomed me back to the scenes after all these years.

The Overlord Messiah EP. was abandon  since 1988 all these years sitting in my drawer in my house for near 30 years all the while I would take it out every 5 to 10 years and spin it a few times then put it away wishing I could have released it to the world.

After I decided to come back to the scene and write music again I started my journey to put my new music together it took a few years till I was realistically able to get to this point but in the meantime I released this record of my old band "The Overlord Messiah" while Iwork on my newest  record: "HORRIFIC"

. Now I am an Independent artist with CD Baby.

" PINK " is a song recorded by American producer MarloDaMartian , It was released independently on March 1, 2021, "PINK" is a  hip hop  song referring to the color Pink as a code word for a woman’s desireable body parts. Its sexual references and undertones allow Marlo to display his lyrical abilities over a smooth melodic beat

James Burton is one of the most recognized guitarists of all time. He is the inventor and father of Chicken Pickin’; a fusion of Country and Rhythm and Blues. He is in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and in the top 20 on Rolling Stone’s list of the Top 100 Guitar Players.

James introduced the Chicken Pickin’ style at the age of 15 on the original recording of Suzie Q. He is known as the Guitarist for Elvis, The Everly Brothers, The Beach Boys, The Buffalo Springfield, Ricky Nelson, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, John Denver, Gram Parsons, Jerry lee Louis and so many others. The list is at least a mile long.

We were in the studio getting ready for a recording session when the phone rang. Ray picked up the phone and said American Recording. It was James Burton on the phone. James and Ray were friends from over four decades of making and working on hit songs. One thing lead to another and James said he would like to say hello to the guys in Big Rain.

Wow one of our guitar heroes wanted to talk to us!

It was so very cool, and what an honor it was.

Needles to say the band was inspired and did some Chicken Pickin’ that day. But really, nobody does it as good as James Burton.

Similar to James Burton we developed a signature sound that was a fusion of Rock, Rhythm and Blues and Country. This became our brand of Country Rock that took in other elements as well. As you listen you will hear different rhythms and feels along with different picking approaches. These are all played on electric, acoustic, pedal steel guitars, and mandolin.
